[Anime - worth checking out, I think]

Version 1.05 (17.04.2011)
———————————————
This is NOT a list of best Anime. It’s actually a list of good ideas and motives. Some of those series are good, other flawed but worth at least a sneak-peak.

#
[A]
- Area 88 TV (12 eps) – Aviation, Military – Very good, solid series about jets and betrayal. Doesn’t share the same story as the OVA.
- Area 88 OVA (3 eps/2 eps) – Aviation, Military – Clearly superior to it’s successor. I would recommend watching this after the “TV” one.
- Appleseed (Movie) – Post-Apo, Mecha – The first CGI movie on this list, the visuals didn’t age well.
[B]
- Black Lagoon (12 eps) – Guns – Shit blowing up.
- Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage (12 eps) – Guns – More shit blowing up.
- Blue Gender (26 eps) – SF, Horror – Mother earth strikes back.
- Blue Submarine No. 6 (4 eps) – SF, Post-Apo – Well, it has subs, that’s awesome, right?
[C]
- Cowboy Bebop (26 eps) – Outer Space, Western – Because it has style and a proper ending.
D
E
F
[G]
- Geneshaft (13 eps) – SF, Outer Space – This is on the list only because I’m a sucker for Space and the “10 women/1 man” motive.
- Ghost in the Shell (Movie) – SF, Cyberpunk – If you didn’t see this then something is wrong with you.
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (26 eps) – SF, Cyberpunk – Season of Awesomeness.
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig (26 eps) – SF, Cyberpunk – Season 2 of Awesomeness.
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – Solid State Society (Movie) – SF, Cyberpunk – Ending of Awesomeness.
- Golgo 13: Queen Bee (1 ep) – Made in the style of the ’80, a OVA about a professional assassin a.i. sex, violence and the world being a fuck-up place. Totally awesome.
- Grave of the Fireflies (Movie) – Tragedy, World War 2 – Probably the saddest thing you will ever watch.
- Great Teacher Onizuka (43 eps) – Comedy, School – One of the better adaptations of Manga (and that one sucked) out there.
[H]
- Hellsing (13 eps) – Vampires, Supernatural – If you are looking for faggy bloodsuckers then this is the wrong place.
[I]
- Interstella 5555 (Movie) – SF, Music – animated album, “Daft Punk – Discovery”… it’s awesome.
- Iria: Zeiram (6 eps) – SF – I seriously don’t know what to write about it.
- Irresponsible Captain Tylor (26 eps) – SF, Comedy – being adapted from a series of novels, here is the crew of the Destroyer Soyokaze… and her Captain, which no rule could contain.
[J]
- Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (Movie) – Thriller – The MG-34 is awesome.
K
[L]
- Level-E (13 eps) – SF, Comedy – Manga adoption of a work that at it’s core was supposed to troll the reader… and it fucking did.
[M]
- Memories (3 eps) – SF – Three different movies.
- Mononoke (12 eps) – Horror – The right mix of horror and suspense (a lot of it) shown in an abstract way.
[N]
- Najica Blitz Tactics (12 eps) – Guns&Panties – Being mainly about fan-service (loli included) and a cheesy story, this series has something what other more serious titles are missing… a style.
O
[P]
- Princess Mononoke (Movie) – Fantasy – Ghibli, enough said.
Q
[R]
- Record of Lodoss War OVA (13 eps) – Fantasy – In the “Sword-Magic” category it doesn’t get better then this.
- Riding Bean (1 ep) – Guns&Cars – Why aren’t Kenichi Sonodas works fully serialized, fuck!
[S]
- Seikai no Monshou/Crest of the Stars (13 eps) – Space Opera – Here it is, my favorite series. This time we are not fighting on the humans side (lie).
- Seikai no Senki/Banner of the Stars (13 eps) – Space Opera – You won’t find better space battles in any other anime.
- Seikai no Senki II/Banner of the Stars II (13 eps) – Space Opera – Because conquering stuff isn’t always fun.
- Seikai no Senki II/Banner of the Stars III (2 eps) – Space Opera – Why the fuck does this only have 2 episodes.
- Spice and Wolf (13 eps) – Medieval, Drama, Economy – Who said medieval economy can’t be fun.
- Spice and Wolf II (12 eps) – Medieval, Drama, Economy – More medieval economy and drama.
- Spirited Away (Movie) – Fantasy – Ghibli, enough said.
[T]
- Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (27 eps) – Mecha, Comedy, Sci Fi – ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER!
- Those Who Hunt Elves (12 eps) – Comedy, Fantasy – Nothing like making fun from fantasy stories… did I mention they are also stripping elves?
- Those Who Hunt Elves II (12 eps) – Comedy, Fantasy – This series English dubbing is probably the only one that didn’t make me instantly wish I was deaf.
- They Were Eleven (Movie) – SF – a title from the ’80. A group of 10 students is on their last test, isolated on an abandoned space-ship… but why is there 11 of them?
U
[V]
- Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (Movie) – Vampires, Supernatural, SF – Vampires and shit, yo.
- Vandread (13 eps) – Comedy, Outer Space, Mecha – Yeah, you can laugh at me.
- Vandread: The Second Stage (13 eps) – Comedy, Outer Space, Mecha – Did I mention how much I like Space?
[W]
- Wolf’s Rain (30 eps) – Post-apocalyptic – Not my type of a show but fuck me if I won’t acknowledge it as being “worth it”. In post-apocalyptic soviet Russia, the Wolf eats you.
X
[Y]
- You’re Under Arrest! (51 eps) – Comedy, Police – A little bit of everything.
- Yukikaze (5 eps) – Aviation, Military, SF – Macross can go suck a cock, this is how you do it.
[Z]
- Zipang (26 eps) – Military, World War 2 – Time-traveling warship FTW.
- Zone of the Enders: Idolo (1 ep) – SF, Mecha, Outer Space – Opening to the “Zone of the Enders” series.

God, this is so fucking nerdy but what the hell , I’m drunk. Your list- not so shit, most of it I agree with. Well, I can’t stand 99% of anime comedy , except GTO. So, let me add:

-Berserk. – Yeah, the manga is (was) much better, but what’s new.
-Captain Harlock TV – Part for nostalgia, part because it was good. And Cool. And sometimes awesome.
-Guardian of the Sacred Spirit – good medieval Japan fantasy.
-Gungrave – Mainly because 3/4 of it is Godfather/Once upon a time in America- mobster movie done right.
-Monster – Awesome. Really, it’s something else.
-Ninja Scroll (the movie) – It’s good for what it is, which is the best anime ninja action movie.
    -Tsukihime – Veeery good atmosphere.
-Legend Of Galactic heroes – The one Space Opera to rule them all. Crest of the stars drew heavy inspiration from this one.
-The Twelve Kingdoms – fantasy/mythology/political intrigue all done superbly. Too bad it was unfinished.
    -Battle Angel – Good cyberpunk.
-Planetes – Realistic sci-fi at its best.
-Area 88 – What can I say, childhood fav. The best air-fights.
-SDF macross – another childhood fav.
-Kaze no Yojimbo – Kurosawas Yojimbo in present day with a mystery twist… wait what ? Well, it’s good.

Damn, by the time I finished this , I sobered up.

    - Gungrave – why does everybody I meet like it? First of all it’s fucking boring… one big retrospective with a transparent ending.

    - Ninja Scroll – have it on VHS (censored), so-so.

    - Legend Of Galactic Heroes – it’s not really “that good”. To say more, I got bored around episode 60… and God, the axe fighting and other stupid shit.

    - The Twelve Kingdoms – heard a lot of good stuff about it, it’s on my to-watch-list.

    - Battle Angel – OVA, why even bother, just get the real deal (manga).

    - Planetes – also to-watch.

I will look up the rest

    My five cents:

-Hellsing, the series. If only for the awesome soundtrack.

-Iria, for the 80′s SF feel.

-Full Metal Alchemist – don’t you find it awesome, Whiskey? ;>

    - Hellsing is… if I think about it, yeah, will put it on the list.

    - Iria – already on the list, like it.

    - Full Metal Alchemist – trying to troll me won’t do you any good.

Hmm, I forgot to mention Mononoke and Black Lagoon.

    - Black Lagoon – I can agree, will put it on the list.

    - Mononoke – Normally, I can’t put this on the list because I didn’t watch it… but I will give you the benefit of doubt for the “Area 88″ this one time.

Cowboy bebop the movie is worth mentioning here too. If you haven’t watched it WW, do it. And Fate/Stay night now that I think of it.

Get real, who didn’t watch “knocking on heavens door”. I’m pretty satisfied with the series (more then the movie) so I didn’t put it on the list.

    - Fate/Stay Night – I didn’t watch this but have serious doubts from what I have read about it and stuff I saw in the manga. Not to mention it’s based on a game (ero-novel to be precise), go figure.

Yeah, I know that , but from what I gather The anime is pretty different than the anime (and there’s no echi stuff in the anime) and the manga was just released after the anime. I consider it pretty good in all levels (nothing spectacular). I liked Tsukihime better, but if you seen it, taey have the same style in terms of atmosphere.

I’ve got a habit of bumping this thread… I just watched Requiem From The Darkness and it was very good. Definitely recommended. I’ve started Desert Punk and it seems promising.

“I’ve got a habit of bumping this thread”
    I’m very thankful for that.

With “Desert Punk” the thing is, it was on the list for some time but I change my mind. What really makes this title stand out was probably the last few episodes (the ark of the main character who also… I won’t spoil it for you) unfortunately this anime belongs to those with no ending which is very frustrating.

“Requiem From The Darkness” – looks like it’s very much in the spirit of Mononoke which I still did not watch. I have to get my butt into gear and start watching stuff again. There are still some titles from the 80′ I have to see.

Version 1.02 – .01 meaning I added one title under “G” and one under “T”

Version 1.03 – I finally got to watch “Requiem From The Darkness” and “Mononoke”. RFTD was good but to tell you the truth I don’t like horrors… on the other hand Mononoke has shown to be something truly unique.

Ok, I’m back in my anime mood.
    - I think Fate/Stay Night deserves to be mentioned. Probably the most commercial anime of type-moon, but I find it very enjoyable.
    - Planet Of The Beast King definitely deserves to be mentioned. Pretty solid PA/Sci-fi with just the right length.

And that’s my wisdom for now. Next on my watch list are Blue Submarine No. 6, Golgo 13 and soultaker.

  14. Rasputin
    20/11/2010 at 22:10 | #14

    Also needs to add:
*Noir – I thought it was very good. At least it had 0% fanservice.
    *Ergo Proxy
    *Earth Girl Arjuna

I liked the general idea behind Noir but somehow the rest didn’t stick. Ergo Proxy, that one I may still watch.

Earth Girl Arjuna is a hell no on all fronts.

    I’ve got to second Berserk.

Black Cat – Very charming series.

Hunter X Hunter – *The* most feelgood anime.

    Death Note

    Maybe Trinity Blood?

    Full Metal Alchemist

5 centimeters per second (Byōsoku Go Senchimētoru) – Amazingly detailed art.

I heard Basilisk was good too, but I only watched one episode.
